I represent Alperton, one of the wards that has been most impacted by the coronavirus.

It has been devastating to hear from dozens of residents about their own personal loss. This period has changed our community forever. It is now essential that we understand why Brent was so excessively affected and what needs to be done to protect residents in the future.

For me, there are two clear questions - how we safeguard our Black and ethnic minority communities and whether density of population is another root cause of what we’ve experienced in Brent.

Why has it taken a global pandemic to shine a spotlight on racial inequalities in our country? Studies show that Black and South Asian communities have been disproportionately impacted. But beyond gestures, a plan must now be formulated to ensure there is a concerted effort to offer targeted support, without it, many of our residents will continue to be placed at a heightened risk.

At last month’s Planning Committee I raised the issue of Covid transmission in densely populated high rise buildings. Thorough investigations must be conducted to evaluate the safety of such buildings in relation to the spread of viruses. Brent needs to prioritise looking at whether this form of housing, which naturally makes it impossible to avoid communal interaction, is fit for purpose.

These are just two areas of concern that I know many would like those in charge to address.

We need answers and appropriate action to keep all residents safe.
