Plans have been secured for a major transformation which will “bring new life” to a row of railway arches.
The 11 arches along Kilburn Mews are set to have an upgrade along with the surrounding outdoor space between Kilburn High Road and Loveridge Road.
Places for London, the Transport for London property company, says that once complete there will be a “new public realm” off the busy high street.
Architects DK-CM will lead the works, which will include changes to the arches and bridges, along with planters and tree pits.
It is said that the changes will transform the commercial units in the area and provide new spaces for businesses.
The arch units will have new frontages and improved energy efficiency from air source heat pumps to provide heating and cooling, lowering utility costs for businesses there.
After feedback from 60 per cent of women in the survey responses last year, safety improvements will be implemented, such as installing CCTV cameras and improving lighting in the area.
Geography students from Hampstead School studied the sites and relayed their recommendations to improve the project, such as including outdoor seating, cycle parking and making it pedestrian friendly.
Occupiers were told in 2019 that there was an intention to redevelop the arches and that Places for London required vacant possession to refurbish the mews.
Jo Fisher, head of arches at TfL said: “We are keen to bring new life to these arches at the north end of Kilburn High Road and are delighted to have now secured planning permission for these improvements.
“This work is part of our wider investment into providing new spaces and opportunities for our tenants, many of which are small businesses across London’s diverse communities, and we look forward to working with the Kilburn community to create a welcoming gateway at our station.”
“This is not solely an investment in the arches, but in the town of Kilburn as a whole.”
Councillor Shama Tatler, deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, growth and planning at Brent Council said: “This is brilliant news for Kilburn - local residents and businesses alike. These improvements will not only enhance the arches, but create new opportunities for our small business community and help create a safer and more welcoming space for everyone.”
