Thousands of spectators turned up for the Hindu Diwali ‘Festival of Light’ at the Neasden Temple which this year also marked Remembrance Sunday when the mayor of London arrived in the evening.
Sadiq Khan met crowds at the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir or temple which paid tribute to the Armed Forces in a special Remembrance assembly attended by members of the British Army, Western Front Association, Royal British Legion and various faith communities.
The mayor then set of the firework display at the temple which could be seen for miles over north-west London.
“I am in awe of what Neasden Temple volunteers do,” he said. “Your work is serving everybody, helping the elderly and particularly those struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.”
The Temple is in partnership with the Felix Project supplying fresh fruit and vegetables to food banks for families in need.
“Making sure others benefit makes me proud,” the mayor added. “The Felix Project is an amazing organisation.”
The Neasden Temple has a mission “to transcend boundaries and uniting communities”, with Diwali fostering harmony in the world.
